Figure 2-53(b) shows a typical elasto-fluid oil film shape and pressure distribution. Except for both ends of the 261 mechanical seal, most of the oil film thickness in the contact area is uniform. In populated areas, hydrodynamic pressure is generated due to the wedge effect, which makes the fluid pressure ahead of the Hertz output. The fluid pressure in the middle of the contact zone is basically similar to the Hertzian pressure. At the exit, due to the sudden drop from high pressure to atmospheric pressure, a 'neck' is formed: at the exit end, the pressure and pressure gradient are equal to zero.
