Large Custom Gear on the Bench – This Is a Customer Sample, and the Kind of Gear We Can Build

This is a customer sample that came through our workshop — a large, non-standard custom gear, sent to us as the reference for what the customer needs. It is not our finished product; it is the thing we would build to.

The sample is a sizeable ring gear — a heavy-section flange with a large center bore, a keyway, multiple bolt holes, and a precision-cut external tooth profile. The diameter, the number of teeth, the module, the bore tolerance, and the bolt-circle pattern are all defined by the customer. When we take on this kind of job, our work is: take the sample and the drawing, source the right blank, machine the gear on our CNC equipment, verify the critical dimensions, and ship it out ready to drop into the customer's assembly.

For this kind of part, the things that matter are the ones you don't see at a glance:
- Tooth profile accuracy across the full circumference — runout, pitch, and concentricity need to stay within the drawing tolerance or the gear won't mesh cleanly with its mating part.
- Bore and keyway finish — that's where the shaft lives, and surface finish on the bore and keyway directly affects how the gear seats and runs on the shaft.
- Material and hardness — for gears in continuous duty, the alloy and heat-treatment spec are usually called out, and we work to those.

Gears like this are part of the rotating equipment stack — and as a manufacturer of mechanical seals for rotating equipment, we know that the gear above and the seal below have to line up to make the whole machine run. When we build custom gears in our shop, they go through the same documentation and inspection discipline as our mechanical seal line.
