If two objects are in static contact, when a tangential force acts on an object to make it have a tendency to move relative to each other, the static friction force acts between the two objects in the contact direction, the magnitude of which is equal to the applied tangential force. Usually, the static friction force we refer to is the minimum tangential force required to make the object overcome the maximum resistance between the static friction surfaces and start moving.
