The development process of mechanical seals:

Among the various sealing forms for rotary fluid machinery, there are two types of sealing interfaces (see Figure 0-1): one is a radial seal formed by two radially opposed cylindrical surfaces Leakage occurs in the gap between the cylindrical surfaces; the other is the axial seal formed by two axially opposed flat surfaces, and the leakage occurs in the gap between the flat annular surfaces. The mechanical seal belongs to the latter.
