Graphite is the most used soft material for sealing surface and the widest application range. It has many excellent properties such as good self-lubricity and low friction coefficient, excellent corrosion resistance, good thermal conductivity, low linear expansion coefficient, Good assembly performance, easy processing and low cost. Graphite can be made into sintered graphite with various physical and mechanical properties according to the different raw materials used, sintering time and sintering temperature. There are two common types: carbon graphite and electrochemical graphite.

Electrochemical graphite, also known as soft graphite, is obtained from charred graphite through high temperature graphitization treatment at 2400~2800℃. It is characterized by softness, low strength, good self-lubrication, easy processing, suitable for media Working conditions that are clean, poor in lubrication or prone to friction, such as light hydrocarbon media.

Carbon graphite is called high-strength graphite or hard graphite. It is characterized by high strength, high hardness, wear resistance, but high brittleness and low thermal conductivity. It is a commonly used soft ring material for mechanical seals. Carbon graphite has different grades, which can be used in a wide range of anti-abrasive wear applications. According to the Shore hardness of carbon graphite, it can be divided into various grades of soft, medium-hard and hard carbon graphite (Table 5- 2).
