Seizure in mechanical seal applications

Seizure is caused by the friction of the interface causing the surface to be welded and the relative movement of the surface stops. This surface welding is caused by the adhesion between solid surfaces. When seizure occurs, the strength of the bonding point is quite high, and the instantaneous flash temperature on the surface is also quite high. Therefore, the adhesion area is large, and the strength of the bonding point is quite high. The bonding point cannot be cut off from the substrate, so that the relative movement is forced to stop.

In some cases, the transfer of material between surfaces due to adhesive wear may be beneficial. For example, when metal and polymer materials are rubbed, the polymer materials are transferred to the metal surface and form a monomolecular layer on it, which will help reduce friction and wear.
