Comparison of fluid film models of three hydrostatic seals of mechanical seals:

The fluid film bearing capacity and axial stiffness of the grooved throttle, radial stepped and radially converged hydrostatic seals are different from each other.

Figure 2-51(a) shows the relationship between the dimensionless stiffness-to-leak ratio KQ and the relative gap S of these models. It can be seen that under different relative gaps, their stiffnesses are different from each other. The former only has greater stiffness under larger relative gaps, while the latter two models have greater stiffness under smaller relative gaps. . Figure 2-51(b) and (c) show the relationship between the axial fluid film stiffness and the fluid film angular stiffness of the three types of seals and the fluid film thickness (gap). It can be seen that, at the design point, the stiffness of the orifice throttling type is greater than the latter two, the sealing stiffness of the convergent cone is the smallest, and the radial step type is in the middle.
