Gas film seal is a new type of non-contact mechanical seal that relies on micron gas film lubrication. It is widely called Dry Gas Seal in engineering. Its development process is described in Table 3-1.

It can be seen from the development history of air film seal that air film seal is a new and advanced mechanical seal for rotating shafts. It is mainly used to seal gas or liquid media in rotating fluid machinery. Compared with other seals, the gas film seal has the characteristics of low leakage rate, wear-free operation, low energy consumption, long life, high efficiency, simple and reliable operation, and the sealed fluid is free from oil pollution. For example, in compressors, gas film seals can replace labyrinth seals, floating ring seals and oil-lubricated mechanical seals. Now, gas film seals are widely used in compressors and special pumps.
