In the application of mechanical seals, the friction surface is often in contact with surrounding media such as gas and lubricant. The molecules on the solid surface produce a force field pointing to space on the surface due to the balance of attraction of the surrounding molecules or atoms, so it has the ability to attract other molecules. When the solid surface molecules adsorb some of the surrounding media, the attraction of the internal molecules to the surface molecules is partially offset, the surface energy is also reduced, and part of the heat is released. The released heat is called adsorption heat. The adsorption equilibrium of surrounding medium molecules on the solid surface is a dynamic equilibrium. On the one hand, the solid surface attracts the molecules of the surrounding medium; on the other hand, the molecules adsorbed on the solid surface may break away from the solid surface due to constant thermal motion. This process is called desorption. When the speeds of adsorption and desorption are equal, the adsorption reaches equilibrium. The amount of heat of adsorption reflects the firmness of the adsorption of surrounding medium molecules on the solid surface. The greater the heat of adsorption of the lubricant on the metal surface, the stronger the adsorption.
