How does the mechanical seal control the damage and wear rate to increase the service time?

Damage is an ineffective way that mechanical seals often occur. It is a key issue to control the damage regularity of mechanical seals, predict the wear rate, and find ways to increase the service life of wear resistance. The main forms of wear that can occur on conflicting surfaces are: adhesive wear, abrasive wear, fatigue wear, fretting wear and erosive wear.
1. Mechanical seal adhesive wear
Due to the presence of rough asperities on the surface, surface contact occurs at loose asperities. When the conflict occurs at the contact point, the direct contact between the metals will appear when the lubricating film and the surface film are broken, and the continuous point is continuously cut off by shearing, and at the same time a new continuous point is generated.
If the shear occurs at the joint interface, there is no wear on the two surfaces; if the shear occurs in the metal, there will be transfer of surface metal, and the surface will be damaged and worn. The phenomenon of metal transfer is an important characteristic of adhesive wear.
2. Mechanical seal abrasive wear
Abrasive wear is a common form of wear, accounting for about half of the total wear. Abrasive wear is when the contact surface is relatively moved by hard particles or asperities on the harder surface. During the friction process, the surface is scratched and the surface material falls off.
Abrasive wear is a“micro cutting process”.Abrasives will cause the surface layer material to be deformed alternately, resulting in alternating contact stress and fatigue damage to the surface. However, the mechanical action of abrasive particles on the surface always plays an important role.
