When designing the dynamic and static rings, if the supporting method of the ring is unreasonable, under the action of medium pressure, spring force and supporting reaction force, it may cause excessive deformation of the seal ring and make the seal failure.
The elastic modulus of general metal materials is relatively large, even under the action of higher pressure, the deformation of the seal ring is not significant. For materials with low modulus of elasticity, such as graphite and plastic rings, when under high pressure, a non-negligible force deformation will occur. In mechanical seals, soft materials such as graphite and plastic are often used as static rings. For a static ring with a given structural size, under certain load conditions, the degree of deformation mainly depends on the support method of the ring. Figure 2-18 shows several support methods and stress conditions of the static ring.

When the static ring is subjected to medium pressure, spring force and the reaction force of the support evenly distributed along the circumference, a moment will be caused, so that the ring section will deflect and cause the seal ring to deform. After calculation, the deformation of the graphite ring with several support methods shown in Figure 2-18 (a) is larger than that of the other types, so its use pressure should not be too high. The difference between Figure 2-18(b) and Figure 2-18(c) is that the cross-sectional dimensions are different. The back of the ring rests on the B plane of the ring seat, and the ring deformation is relatively small. Under the same radial dimension, the axial dimension of Figure 2-18(d) is smaller than that of Figure 2-18(b), which is more conducive to reducing the amount of deformation.
